I think that many people used poetry for the wrong reasons. A lot of it is just awful. As a kid I thought they were more interested in appearing intelligent.

I often think of a lot of poetry as the vomit of someone who just had to unload.

Maybe because so much of the poetry that was given as an assignment in high school was so full of ambiguity. I really have never enjoyed poetry unless it was easy to interpret...I'm not dumb I just like to read for enjoyment and if I have to really think about what I'm reading...I don't enjoy it... Reading to me is a way of escaping!

noyesno: Why does poetry have to be popular?

may82: A poem and a lyric are two different things. Both can deal with metaphor. There is a fine distinction between them.

Personally, poetry never became unpopular. I still believe we live in a world full of poetry---songs we hear everyday, photographs we see and take---it's just a matter of how we see and feel things. If you will look at a song's lyrics, that's poetry (with music and melody added in it).

it iss popular amongst those who appreciate it, but society does not @advertise@ it as being socially accepted anymore. my BF writes poetry, some of it is creepy and some of it is groovy and interesting, i see it as a way to express emotions personally and i am a very privaqte person and would not want to expose my thoughts and stuff so it;s not really for me but i think that its great to read other peoples stuff, especially if its people you know and love! xxx

I guess I never got that memo. Go into any major bookstore, and you'll find many collections and anthologies of poetry.

Popular with whom? High school students? College students?

The genre of poetry is very much alive.
