Average Indian is earning 47 times less than Americans but they are paying taxes (in %) far more than the richest countries:
(1) On petrol they are paying 52% of the price per liter as taxes.
(2) On electricity bill they are paying a premium,
(3) Water tax
(4) House tax
(5) Sales tax
(6) Octroi
(7) Excise (center & state)
(8) Education cess
etc etc etc.................
Most of the part of any product is made of taxes.
There is never any protest by the public about these excess taxes.
Are the Indian public so rich or just lazy bunch of cowards who are afraid to protest.

If you work you have to pay tax (service tax). Isn't it foolish.

Dear Mau,
If a milk men has very few cows and needs a lot of milk, he cannot just go on milking his cows until the blood comes instead of milk. He must have more cows or the few he has will also die.

America and India have different economic structures. It took 200 long years to develop america into such an stable nation. India's post independence history is just 60 years. Besides India started off with almost nothing in it's pocket.
Although Indians earn 47 times less, but also they spend far less. You can figure that out by difference in rates of various food products. However, goods related to technology maybe cheaper over there, because most the time we have to import those goods.
Oil needs to be imported. Electricity is generated at some cost. Water supplied to you is extracxted, purified, and transited and these activities cost. The area around your house needs to be maintained. Smuggling needs to be avoided. Resellers and dealers need to be checked, else they could sell you a non-genuine product (they still do if you don't ask for bill with VAT or CST). Transportaion infrastructure costs. Governemnt schools provide free education, but the government pays the employees. Governemnt hospitals serve patients for cheap the the doctors are highly paid.
How do you think can government manage these expenses if they don't earn anything. Instead of realizing you economy works, we cheat government. We don't pay taxes, steal electricity, misuse government assets (trains, buses, roads, water, etc.) We spread litter all around assuming that it's governments job to keep things clean. As a result the government ends up earning less and spending more. In such cases the government doesn't mint money out of it's pocket, it increases the taxation burden. Only if all the indians could honestly pay their taxes, and preserve government assets, the tax rates would definitely go down.
Taxes are recorded revenues generated by the government. This amount goes into the treasury (in RBI), and is utilised for developmental programmes. No authority can take out this money for any other purpose apart from infrastructure managment and developmental programmes.
Instead of protesting so called excess taxes, start paying them. And consult a good C.A. He would explain youhow each and every tax is beneficial for the country and the citizens.
All the best...
:-)

Actually, the answer to this lies in statistics. What the..? ..you'll say, but your definition of Middle class is very broad-based. The FACT is that very few people in India PAY taxes AT ALL!! Yes, even your so-called Middleclass devises ingenious ways of avoiding tax. Not to mention the countless small business (shop keepers and the like) who dont pay up either. The segment of population that pays tax is the salaried class. Now with such a narrow set of options, the government has no choice but to levy higher percentages as tax! So before criticising, please check whether your local panwallah qualifies to pay (indeed he might!) and does he pay at all! So while all the rich people are always in the limelight for non compliance, the fact is that there is a bigger black hole in the general populace where the tax-due just disappears!

Apart from what has been stated above, only 5% Indians are paying taxes. The most eligible farmers, traders and businessmen try to evade taxes in view of the high incidence of taxation. The tax regime is strict but lax on bringing more and more into the tax net because of official lethargy. It would be in national interest to have a low rate of taxes, of all kinds, to promote paying taxes by all eligible people keeping in view the greater number of populations, net incidence of taxation would be far greater than the present. Indian public is neither lethargic nor cowards, it is simply the official apathy to contribute.

They are not lazy but just not bothering. Perhaps too meek to ask questions or raise objections or seek explanation
.
They are sharply divided varna wise, within the varna caste wise (Varna means a division of the entire indian-hindu society) This has further been abused by dirty political idiosyncrasies. This is further divided by different religions. To my observation it is only a lethargy or "whatever we do nothing will happen" attitude.
Now a days certain groups are strong in one thing. That is openly criticising the courts.
/with all this we are growing. The present generation is happy . I am worried about today's toddlers who may face a lawless, waterless, fuel less generation.
It may also be true that the effect is not stringent and pungent for us today.

They are not rich nor lazy.
Indians have been dominated by some country or the other in the past , hence the mentality of the lay man is submissive to authority, also the buttering up kind. Besides quite a % is illiterate, there is lack of awareness. Indians are not emotionally expressive, the pent up emotions always show -vely and that to when things get really out of control. Indians in general tend to accept things in the name of tradition and have no faith in themselves to challenge or change things. Hence they accept even the looting by the govt or anyone

It's not so much Indians being lazy (afterall we are such hard workers). It is more apathy, the lack of effective leadership among the people as well as the fact that many intelligent Indians find politics boring or feel that they are too smart for politics.
