It could be one of the following:New cycle , that is the irregularity experienced by some young girls at the onset of the periods. Their cycle can be irregular for months or years whilst it is establishing itself. Dietary problems , eg anorexia, bulimia or simply poor diet,Too much exercise ,Drugs - prescription and recreational,Break in routine ,Thoughts and emotions ,Sexual activity - especially when it is a new occurrence,Anxiety about pregnancy ,Illness or physiological imbalance eg thyroid conditions.

I know exactly how you feel I had this problem for 2 years you might wish for your doctor to refer you to a gynacologist to see if their is anything wrong, I consulted a female doctor who was that unsympathetic, she asked me why was I bothered about this, after numerous tests, she said my hormone level was a bit higher than normal but nothing to worry about. She gave me a pill that would stop my periods for 3 weeks and to see if that would regulate me. After I came off the pills I had a really bad period in which I had bad stomach cramps, kept being sick, bleed that much I went thought 10 sanitary towels in one night, I called NHS Helpline they told me it was coming off the pills. I seeked advise from a pharmacist to take Well Woman which is natural herbal pill that looks after your immune system and total well being, it contains star flower oil and evening primrose oil to help maintain a healthy hormone balance plus Iron to help blood formation, my periods are now regular . If the doctors are no help you might want to try this or even try this before you go to the doctors, but if it does not work seek advice at the doctors You can pick up this product at Boots, Superdrug or at www.wellwoman.com.

I would like to say i found this in another yah answers forum with girl who had same prob, so if this is helpul dont thank me, I just coppied it for you, it sounds less serious from what this girl is saying so it might calm u a little. i wouldn't say it's completely abnormal. I've had a 15 day period before, i was gutted. but it happened just after i changed my method of contraception, to the implanon. it's calmed down and I've not had one like that since.

sometimes stress and worry can alter your periods, maybe there's something on your mind subconsciously that's causing this.

Your doctor will know better than anyone, so book yourself in and get piece of mind.

Good luck and don't worry.

Are you suffering from stress? This can sometimes make your period last longer. It depends on your age too....are you approaching the menopause, cus this can sometimes have this effect.

I would go to the doctors for reassurance or you could call the NHS helpline for some advice.

Take care x

No, and this bleeding (breakthrough bleeding which can make one think it's a period) could be a symptom of an infection such as cervicitis (inflammation of the cervix).

I would recommend seeing your dr to have this evaluated.

go see your ob-gyne immediately. it is not normal to have three weeks period unless you only have your period once a year (once again abnormal)
