Does this will affect my files and documents in my C disk or partition?

If so can I give my spaces in D partition to the C partition without changing contents of the C partition?

Thankful dumb.

Hi

There are 2 good tools for this...

1) Partition Magic ( commercial )
2) GNU parted ( free software )

But note that this is a potentially risky operation and you MUST backup all your data before you attempt this.

I have used Partition Magic extensively and never had problems except I once lost my whole drive when power failed while moving partitions.

There is an alternate solution, you can "mount" any folder on your C: partition with D:, that means C:\XYZ will actually point to D:\

This will work on WIndows 2000 and above if your partitions are NTFS.
You can do that via the Disk management administrative tool.

One more thing you can do is to use Disk management of XP to convert your disk from "Basic" to "Dynamic" Then you can delete your D: partition and grow your C: to whatever size. In future even if you add a new hard disk, you can stretch the same C: partition to span across 2 drives.

But all these tasks are best left to the geekiest relative you have and PLEASE backup your data first.

Regards
Vivek

Windows has two different ways to manage partitions:
The DISKPART command run from a command prompt
The Disk Management section of Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management

Either will let you merge partitions, but you will lose the data on both partitions.

If you want to merge them without losing data, you will need a third party program (Partition Magic is the favorite). PM will allow you to merge the two without losing any data from the C partition (you will wipe the D partition)

Partition Magic used to be able to do it. It has been many years since I used it though, I think it has gotten a lot trickier.

Make sure that you really have 2 partitions first, and not 2 separate hard drives.

Yes, can give space in D: to C: without changing contents of either. I use a program called "Partition Magic" to merge partitions & more. It is a Symantec product. http://www.symantec.com
Windows XP Disk Management tool shows a nice display of allocated space & allows you to do a few things, like changing drive letters. Right click "my computer", select "manage", select "disk management" to see these options.
