I'm doing a coursework on greeting, so I was wondering what is your way of greeting people and how would you define the term "greeting"?

Greeting is acknowledgement of the presence of another person in your environment, usually when you physically meet, though it can also be when you send your words in written form to another person or when you meet over the telephone or other modern communications gadgets.

When I physically meet someone, we exchange a handshake accompanied by a dood morning, afternoon or evening depending on the type of day. This is always followed by "how are you?" for completeness. Of cause this is done in my own language. Failure to extend a handshake could be considered an indication of resentment. This is our greeting in its simplest form. However there are additional things that would need to be done is you are greeting an elder, a chief, inlaws, etc. I guess this is not necessary for me to expound on right now, but I hope the above helps you...

Generally we wish some good luck while we greet like in India we say Namaste ( Nam Te) Nam means bow Te mean you. It is believed that if you bow to some one you can get his all good behaviours and good manners and in punjabi we call Sat Shri Aakal (sat means True, Shri Aakal Means The God) like God is the only Truth. So i think there are number of ways to hreat people .. it all depends whom you are greeting

Greeting is not only the words hello, how do you do etc.. You might touch somebody on his back or kiss him without saying anything.

I would shake their hand and say ` How are you doing, pleased to meet you` this is what is called an ice breaker, because when the other person replies to me the intial nervousness and unknowing is removed.

Usually either "How're ya doin'?" or "Good to see you." with either a nod or a handshake.
Depending on the situation.
