If you have a dishwasher, you should use it. Not only does it use less water than hand washing, but it also sterilizes your dishes.

A bucket/dish in the sink uses less water, unless you run too much down the drain when rinsing; however, the dishes are hygienically cleaner when using a dishwasher. Kitchens are VERY dirty places, bacteria-wise, so the hotter the water, the better - and your hands would suffer, going into water as hot as a dishwasher uses.
The newer, more efficient dishwashers use less water than older models. The dishwasher manual will tell you exactly how much is used - it varies depending on the cycle options selected.
To reduce the potential for food poisoning, I say "use the dishwasher!" - and also, spray all washable surfaces and cutting boards weekly with 10% bleach to disinfect, and put your kitchen sponge in the dishwasher with the dishes!

A basin in your sink saves you more. You don't have to pay for the special dish washer cleaning fluid, or heating it to the temperatures a dishwasher requires. Not to mention the cost of the dishwasher itself.
