I so hate when moms say "oh if your kids will watch violent movies they will become mass murderers! That is just a joke.

Sure it may be not appropriate for a 6 year old to be watching texas chainsaw massacre... But a 13 or 12 year old who is into horror movies will obviously know its fake.. He is not going to become a mass murderer.

Kids by the age of 12 fully understand what going on in a movie. My friend has 3 sons and the her 13 year old is a gorehound, he loves horror movies. And he is about the most polite kid you would ever meet.

And also, I usually ignore the ratings of movies. Movies that were oscar nominated, or very well made movies that may have an R rating, does not mean its a horrible movie to watch.
It may be complicated for young children to follow but there is no harm done.

If there is a movie that may show nudity (bare bottem or boobs) for a couple seconds.. Cmon people... How does that ruin a 13 year old..

My kids don't like to watch really violent stuff because it's just plain disturbing. They don't enjoy being grossed out, although I was a horror flick lover when I was a kid.

As for watching violence begetting violence, I do believe that seeing excessive violence on the screen has something of a numbing effect over time. The media models behaviors that, like it or not, become part of the picture of how we view our social roles. We see skinny, pretty actresses and models all over TV and the movies, and every pre-teen girl thinks that weighing 102 lbs. and fitting a size 2 jeans is the standard of beauty. Boys see big muscular guys settling their problems with fists and weapons, and the line can get blurred between what the parents are saying in the house, and what the child is seeing on the screen day in, day out. No one can guarantee that kids aren't going to internalize what they're viewing, or predict how much of an effect, if any, that internalization will have on the child's own behavior.

I'm not saying they should all stick to Barney & Disney stuff until they graduate, just that everyone needs to take their own kids' personality into account, and maybe screen movies first, before allowing or fobidding a particular flick.

I let my kids watch most movies out. mine are 6 and 15. My 6 yr old always falls asleep, give her a dark place and shes out. My son LOVED vampire movies at 7. He likes friday the 13th. all of the horor movies, Has watched them since 10 ish i guess. He is not violent, He knows they are not reality. He also plays what they call violent video games, like max paine, grand theft auto, ect, I just make him mute the volume because of all the foul langage.

I couldn't agree more with you! I hate it when some teenager is in the news for shooting some kids or for doing some sort of nasty violent act and they blame a singer or a movie it's complete rubbish. If you teach your child that violence is wrong and that going out and shooting people or killing them with a chainsaw is not the done thing then they won't do it, it's just a cop out to blame violent movies for violent kids.

Young lady I agree with you but think about this. Not every child has the maturity level or mental ability to discern between right and wrong, real or fake so most parents just are not willing to allow their kids to watch what they want. I believe if parents see how responsible you are and how mature you act their opinion of your ability will change. Just remember your parents have your best interest at heart.

I guess it depends on the insight & maturity of the child. I totallly agree with you & your point however, exposure to these movies by children who know nothing other than violence, just concretes their negative views of the world & encourages violence in day to day interactions. I think as parents we have to discriminate between what is appropriate & not appropriate for our own children. Unfortunately some parents are unable to provide this filtration for their children & this is where most problems begin.

I don't think that movies should be to blame for any irrational behavior. It's all in the parenting and the values that are demonstrated to the kids. People just don't want to be blamed for their kids' behavior.

well it could make them take a turn for the worst in thought...i am an example...because kids like to do stunts that they see on tv or a movie in real life and think if they can do it we can to.
