A shark is a generic description of an aquatic animal that has many subspecies. Those subspecies include tiger sharks, nurse sharks, hammerhead sharks, great whites and dozens of others. Think about the difference between a dog and a poodle. It's the same answer. Dog is a species; poodles are a type of the species.
