I think most people wait until thier animal is in pain to put them to sleep. I think few people would agree with other reasons.

Things should die on their own, and by their own hand. And this extends to people. When an animal is going to die, because it is sick or hurt, many times other animals will jump on it and rip its lungs out. Sick or injured animals do not last long in the animal world; the other animals sense something is wrong with it and kill it.
People are the only animals that have this warped and twisted sense that works against nature. Nature says: if it is sick or hurt, kill it. Man says: if it is sick or hurt, keep it alive for as long as possible so it can suffer for a long time and die in agony. This is why we have nursing homes, health care, and knee replacements for 80-year-olds. Instead, we could save a lot of agony and expense by killing off these 87-year-olds and be done with it. It's nature's way, but we refuse to admit it.

I think the question is quality of life not age. If the animal in question still has a good quality life then there is no reason to put the animal to sleep. But when an animal has no joy left i.e., it doesn't play or enjoy cuddling anymore then it is time. People who have had to make the decision will probably agree with me that there is a look in their eyes that say I am sad, I am tired, I am finished, Help Me and you know it is time. I have a 12 yr old mastiff mix that is arthritic and slowing down dramatically however he's not ready to be put down he still plays (he gets tired a lot quicker), he still enjoys cuddling on the couch with us but we know there will come a time when we'll have to make that decision and it's never easy to say good bye to your true friend but sometimes it's the kindest gift you can give your friend.

I agree with you. The animals must always have our best interest in mind. The only way to know for certain is have the pet evaluated by a vet. Some dogs live long happy, healthy lives. But the vet should have the final word. Some dogs can be in deep pain and not even show it. That's due to their natural instincts to survive. Showing pain or weakness in the wild would make them easy prey.

I think animals should definately die on their own, unless they are suffering. I think it is wrong to prolong their life if they are suffering and will never make a meaningful recovery. However, if an animal is hurt, and can be treated by a vet with minimal pain and will recover and be able to lead a happy rest of it's life, then I think it should be given a chance, and only euthanized if it is suffering for an extended period of time, or will never recover.
As far as humans go, I think it should be the same way. If I am going to be in pain, suffering for the rest of my life, like if I had advanced cancer, I would want to be euthanized.

Obviously people are not put to sleep but they are generally able to tell the doctor what they are feeling to the very last minute (ok maybe not always) animals can not tell you what they are feeling and there fore we only asume they are in OK til their very last minute. I think in most cases it's a kind thing for people to have the ability to put their beloved pets to sleep when the time comes, it's never an easy option and think that you are generally a brave person to decide such a fate. I think the problem is some people and vets like-wise play god to easily. No-one is God!!! nor should they play god. I totally agree if it's in the pets best interest.

I believe the dog should die on it's own, unless it is in a lot of pain and suffering, then it becomes cruel to let it live like that. But isn't it interesting that we have the option of making a decision like that but if an eldery relative, or very sick person in general did that it would be considered suicide or murder. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Dr. Kavorkian is in jail for that!
But to answer your question, I agree with you

I can see both sides of the argument. My brother and parents have never had an animal put to sleep. They will let them linger for as long as it takes. I haven't had to make that decision yet, but for my dog I expect that when things get bad, I will go to vet's and hold him as he is put to sleep. I don't want him to suffer and I don't want him to die alone. I'll be there at the end for him. I think the worst thing for him would be if I were asleep when he goes. He's always been there for me and I'll be there for him.

I consider you one hundred%. i've got continuously puzzled why while an animal is ill or old the 1st concern human beings talk approximately are putting it to sleep. We would not dream of putting granny to sleep purely by way of fact she became becoming older. Granny could've been blind and deaf for some years, why did no longer we placed her out of her distress years in the past? this is purely stupid. it is totally straightforward with animals nevertheless. they could be old, deaf, blind, etc. yet i'm beneficial they are in a position to nevertheless sense love. If an animal is in severe discomfort is the only reason that i'd placed it to sleep. i've got had to place 2 animals to sleep and it became undesirable. It became extra handy while they died in my palms of organic reasons.

I had a cat that I had to put to sleep because the vet advised that it would be the best because she would be in to much pain. I also had to help my husband to decide to disconnect his mother from life support, and before they disconnected her the doctors gave her pain medication so she would be in pain. she was not in a coma either and she could sit there and talk to you but she was on life support. so it what you would think is best. If they are just getting old I would not put my pet to sleep but there is something physically wrong sometimes the only answer is to put them, to sleep.

i will not have my cats put down until they can no longer walk and eat or drink. If i think he is suffering to the point where he's saying mommy please help me then i will help him. But my cats are two years old hopefully they have a long time. My mom had a 19 year old cat that couldn't move anymore and wouldn't eat or drink and just constantly yelled in pain and mom said shelooked up at her with this look that said "i'm ready". She said she had never seen a look that pitiful in all her life so she had her put down.
