They are at their farthest distance when, lets say, the Earth is on one side of the Sun and Mars is on the other side of the sun and this distance can be up to about 200,000.000 miles between the two bodies and this figure also varies.

that happened in 2003 , now its getting farther everyday, it wont be close again for 3000 years, it wont start getting closer till 1500 years
