Longitudinal waves would have been a lot harder.
Do you remember the old pen and paper chart plotting machines? They've been largely superceded by computers now, but in essence, you need a motor to feed paper past a pen at a constant speed. The pen must be attached to an arm, which in turn is attached to whatever device is doing the oscillating, such that as it moves, it carries the pen with it. The pen then moves up and down the paper, as the paper moves along, thus tracing out a sine wave. As the oscillations are damped, the amplitude of the sine wave will reduce steadily.
