Yes you can. First ask at your local branch, as they may help, although its unlikely as they will know why you want them :-)
If they don't give them to you, then make a "Subject Access Request" under the data protection act. Send a letter to the Data Protection Officer that the banks head office address, with a cheque for £10 (the maximum that can be charged, but its likely it will be returned to you uncashed). They then have 40 days legally to reply.
Help them to help you, but giving as much info as possible, the branch the account was at, and any addresses you lived at the for the last 6 years.
My site below gives the banks addresses, and also a template letter you can send to the bank to make the Subject Access Request. The letter is asking for copies of charges or statements, but you can get your account details the same way. It might be best to save yourself some time and ask for the account details and copies of charges at the same time.
The site address is below, and is free to use. It explains in a lot of detail how to claim your charges back in 6 simple steps, giving you all the help you need.

You can ask your bank account number to the bank teller. I already did that. When i was about to use my ATM card, I forgot my pin number. So, as a result, I could get my money over the counter. We already live in a computer age so there's no need for you to worry about your bank account number.
Have a nice day :)

Your bank should also be able to identify you and your account by looking at a form of ID.
