Steven, you ask a very good question. Unfortunately, only you have the answer because what works best for you may not work for someone else. It really depends on what you yourself want from a site and how much you can tolerate for things you may not like about the site.
Yahoo is in constant upgrade and many of these upgrades are fixes which are slipped into your computer like spyware enters...while you are using the program. When Yahoo is comfortable that the changes they enter are working well they then will introduce a new version so as to close the door on older ones. They also add additional features to a new version and then the process starts all over again.
My Space does the same thing and so does most every chat or messenger program do the very same. In other words, we, the users, do the road testing for upgrades and our complaints to the support / help for the sites assist them to make needed repairs for improvement.
MySpace dot com is a preditors' holiday because kids leave so much personal data unknowingly in the blogs. Who would ever think a preditor could find someone by looking at a photograph in a blog. Well, if the name of a school is in the background, it's a free bus ticket to disastor. This is but one of the many things helping preditors...just one.
Yahoo has the same situation with blogs as MySpace and also has a photo swap program called 360 which links to a blog if a user wants it to.
Yahoo has constant hacking from porn site girls called "bots" and many are using hi-tech hacking prograns that even Yahoo cannot keep up with. Going into any Yahoo chatroom reveals half the names in that chatroom are "bots" preying on anyone to click on their porn site. Most all of these bots are college girls and guys whom get paid for having someone click on their site. These bots are rarely the ones seen at a porn site as they are just college kids trying to earn some money.
Pornographic material is easier to access on Yahoo than MySpace, but then, it is just as easy to find thru a Google search as well. I believe that Yahoo no longer allows anyone under 18 to enter a chatroom tho. This solves nothing as anyone can lie about their age, right...!
What it all comes down to, Steven, is what you yourself want from a chat site and messenger program. Both sites have some good and some bad about them. Politicians would like to see MySpace shut down but the site is not the reason for preditors being so successful there. The problem is that kids put too much information in their profiles, their photographs, their emails, their chat screen and their blogs.
If you want a totally private program for yourself and friends, I would recommend ICQ... www.mirabilis.com which has some great features. It is a free program. If you load it...load the "pro version" as it has all the feature options.
To wrap this up with regards to your question, Steven...MySpace and Yahoo share little difference as only YOU make the difference...
Be cautious...have fun...

I see alot of folks like myspace, but I have both and really prefer yahoo far more than myspace. Only reason I keep up with myspace is its easier to post pictures en mass for the family to view, only reason I use it.

Well Mysapce is good for looking at other people, and finding friends you haven't talked to in years. Yahoo has everything. So my vote would be Yahoo. Just because it has a lot more to offer. Whenever you are bored, Yahoo always has something for you to do or you can just use it to lookup other sites.
