I was at Wal-Mart yesterday and was looking at the fish there (not buying any, just looking out of curiosity... hey, i was bored). I was looking at the fish decorations, etc, and my fiance was looking at this tank with 4 latge goldfish in it. He told me to come look at it because three of the fish were all nipping and biting the largest goldfish. They would even pin him against the wall, and trap him in. It made me sad to watch, so i went away, but he continued to watch them while i went and got things i needed. 20 minutes later, they were STILL atacking the one fish. It was always the same fish.

Does anyone know why they would do that?

I think the larger goldfish is a female with lots of eggs. The 3 pursuing it likely to male goldfish trying to mate with the female fish. I have seen goldfish spawning and their behavior is rather similar to what you saw at Wal-Mart.

As far as I know, goldfish are rather docile..... unlikely will kill one of their kind.

fish attack other fish for a few reasons
1 the fish could be an outcast
2 the fish might not be well
3 it might have something wrong with it that the other fish don't like
and 4 that fish could pose a threat to the others

that fish (seeing it is the biggest) might be scary to the others so the other fish will gang up on it (just like a whole bunch of people against a bully) the other fish might think it is a threat to their future eggs or most likely the fish is ill and the other fish can sense that. The fish automatically think that it could spread to them so in there minds they will have to get rid of it somehow! there are sooo many answers i don't know what else to say without blabbing on and on!!!!!

They attacking fish were males chasing a female. It will likely kill her. During spawning, you should separate males from females. Breeders usually hand spawn goldfish, because they don't want to risk loosing an expensive breeding female to the wrath of the male goldfish.

goldfish will attack one that is not well, they can sense this, its a shame, the pet shop should have taken it out of the tank, and put it into one by its self and tried to make it better, pet shops dont seem to care much, x
