I find worrying helps me out to a certain degree, if I didn't worry, I might not get things done. For example, I worry about always being able to provide for my children, this causes me to work harder at work. I worry about my childrens health, so I make sure they get all of their appointments with the doc. I worry about my parents and if they are still doing ok, so I call them regulary to make sure.
Worrying about something is being afraid that bad things will happen. I strive to avoid those bad things as much as possible and my worrisome nature helps me to be on top of things.
I know there are things you should not worry about, but it seems to be working well for me. The bible says do not worry about what you will eat, where you will sleep and what you wear. I have been homeless with a 1 yr old daughter bouncing from place to place with nothing to eat for days except the meals I barely could provide for my daughter, which has me thinking that I should worry about those things. I'm not saying the passage was a lie, I'm just saying that God helps those who help themselves.

Worry is not always a waste of time... The fact that you do worry about certain things shows that you have character, a sense of responsibility and heart.
If you want to stop worrying over something that you cannot change, then focus on just that--you can't change it.
My child (who is 17) is a recovering addict and has actually taught me many things in the course of beating his addiction. One of these things is that worrying over what you can't change IS a waste of time and a spiritual drain. The only thing you can do is focus on what is within your control. Many times, if you do that, the very thing that is worrying you will resolve itself.
Good luck!

If you manage to solve this, the next Nobel prize (for Peace?) will be surely yours!
How to block things out of mind? I try thinking exactly the same thing you said: worrying is a waste of time. Or imagine what I would feel like if there would be no worry. Sometimes it helps.

It's true that we worry about things we can't really control. We worry about things we've done in the past; we worry about what we are going to do in the future; we worry about what people think of us; we worry if he/she would leave us at a future date. So the only time in which we can stop worrying is probably if we were the masters of our fate. However, we aren't. We are like ships on a usually troubled water; life has taught us that. Tattered and vulnerable. There are so many things that could bring us down. The water, the shark, the rocks, the rain. That's why we worry. Because we can't help it!

I think this is human nature, few are those who can neglect worrying and work on making tomorrow a better day, as I see and read the answers here, it hit me that if we practice something for some time it become a habit, it says it takes a person 21 day to get used to something so you will call it habit, so maybe if we try to focus on something simply and not worry about it, then we will be worry free eventually. However, a mother cannot but worry about her kids and a manager cannot but worry about a project he is leading..etc. so I guess what you are trying to say here is destructive worrying.

The cause of worry is mostly the fact ....that things have a potential to (or rather already have) turn out in a way WE are not comfortable with them....
Well, we all want to live in a perfect world.. and be comfortable with it all the way.
any distortion, leads to discomfort, eventually worry...
To be able to ACCEPT them, is the closest u can get to not be affected by them.

If there is nothing to worry about, I worry because I'm worried about what I must have missed. There's always something - life just sucks.
