There were many, as the theatre was thriving before movies and television came along.

Perhaps the most famous was George Bernard Shaw, who was Anglo Irish. He was famous not just for plays like "Pygmalion" and "Saint Joan," but also for his participation in the Fabian movement and his intellectual achievement.

Another famous playwright was Noel Coward. His outre personality and clever music sometime overshadow the very fine writing he was capable of.
