no, it's not shameful...it's the boy's prerogative. since it's his birthday, it's only fair that the celebration goes according to his preferences (however, they should be within reason). celebrating at home is not shameful. (maybe he just wants to enjoy his birthday in the comfort of his familiar home). besides, a birthday is not necessarily about how or where you celebrate it. those things are just secondary to the true essence of a birthday. generally, there's the fact that the celebrant has lived for that long and still has a lot ahead of him. his happiness matters most.

No, my dear.
Its not shameful to celebrate your birthday anywhere. It might be your home or a posh hotel.
It depends upon your parents, whether they can afford the cost of a hotel.
If these feelings have been instilled in you by your friends, then get rid of them fast. They are not your friends. They just want to use you for money. When their purpose is over, they won't even want to talk to you.
Friends are those who are there to help you decorate your house for your birthday. They are those who help you in your needs, not play around with your money.
Celebrating a birthday at home spreads the feelings of togetherness, love, warmth. Also most of your relatives can also visit you, in addition to your friends, who are not able to visit a hotel, which directly means MORE GIFTS and more enjoyment. So go ahead, the decision is yours.

Why? Where I come from (Canada), it's perfectly all right to celebrate your birthday at home. In fact, that's pretty much what everyone does - throw a party and invite some friends/relatives to come over.
So. Don't feel/be ashamed. There's nothing to feel bad about. Heck, I celebrate my birthdays with just my family and no one else.
PS - most people don't celebrate birthdays in hotels, so if you don't celebrate yours in one, you're not missing out on much.
Happy Birthday!

In what country/culture?
When I was 14 (awhile back), no one celebrated their birthday in a hotel!! Their celebration was either at home with friends, or at home with family, or MAYBE they went bowling or to the cinema.
This was in the US.

Rock on it a hotel for the simple fact that boys will be boys! Swim, order pizza, listen to music, and best of all mama doesn't have to clean up after a single soul. Hotel all the way from a mom of a son who's 14! Insist, insist, insist! It doesn't cost much.
