No one NEEDS community college. It's just there as an alternative path. So you go to it - or not - for as long as you like. However, community colleges only offer associates degrees, which are the equivalent of two years worth of credits. That doesn't mean that everyone is able to complete an associates degree in two years. Conversely, you could take just one class and have it transferred to a four year college program. It all depends on what you're trying to accomplish.

You can go for just one semester to a community college if you wanted to. You don't need a certain amount of years.
