The calorific value of a fuel is the quantity of heat produced by its combustion - at constant pressure and under a conditions known as " normal " of temperature and pressure (i.e. to 0oC and under a pressure of 1,013 mbar).
The combustion of a fuel product generates water vapor. Certain techniques are used to recover the quantity of heat contained in this water vapor by condensing it.
The Higher Calorific Value (or Gross Calorific Value - GCV) supposes that the water of combustion is entirely condensed and that the heat contained in the water vapor is recovered.
The Lower Calorific Value (or Net Calorific Value - NCV) supposes that the products of combustion contains the water vapor. The heat contained in the water vapor is not recovered.

Hydrogen as fuel : Hydrogen gas has the highest calorific value in the table given above. Thus hydrogen is the best fuel but since its transport and handling is difficult, hydrogen is used as fuel where it is absolutely necessary. Otherwise hydrogen gas as a source of common fuel is not used in domestic or in industrial situations. Hydrogen gas jet along with oxygen gas is used for producing a very hot flame, which is used for cutting metals in industries.

Hydrogen H is the smallest element and it makes a molecule as H2 or combines in many different organic and inorganic substances. Its chemical bonding strength is very high so much that when its atoms fuse the it is a nuclear reaction and when it fissions, there is also a nuclear reaction. The higher calorific value is due to its very high chemical bonding strength and then you have to think this energy has to go somewhere---energy can niether be created nor destroyed but can only be trasnformed to another form.

Are you sure? I thought hydrocarbons had a higher comparative enthalpy of combustion. Certainly the effective energy density for hydrogen, by volume, is rather lower than that for petrol or diesel, even when it's liquified.
