With the exception of a few songs like "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" by Joan Baez (My name is Virgil Cain [...] back with my wife, etc), maybe Kate Bush doing "The Handsome Cabin Boy" (I don't know if that *really* qualifies), or any female singing "Danny Boy" .. nothing springs immediately to mind from the past decade or two.

Can't think of any songs Janis did from that perspective, although she sang about men a lot .. she turned Bobby McGee into a fella. She doesn't use "her" or "she". Maybe female singers are more apt to rework a lyric to suit their gender than men are.

I'm sure they're out there, just not glaringly obvious? Sometimes all it takes is a slip of a pronoun ..
