At about 7-8 weeks, the doctor can do a vaginal ultrasound and see the heartbeat, but most won't do that without a medical reason. By 9 to 10 weeks, the heartbeat can sometimes be heard using the Doppler instrument, but that kind of depends on how the uterus and fetus are lying and if the Doppler is in exactly the right place. By 12 weeks, you should be able to hear the heartbeat consistently using the Doppler. By 20 weeks, the heartbeat can usually be heard just with a stethoscope.
