A "hard" science fiction book (that is, one that makes scientific speculations that are as plausible as possible) states as fact that the total volume of living things contained in fissures and cracks in deep rock is larger than the biomass on the surface of the earth. Could this possibly be true? biomass on the surface of the earth.

Dude..! Good question..!! I was also confused to know this fact when I was in my class 9th. Yes..!! Its true..! Here is the explanation that probably will relinquish ur hunger.. The total volume of living things contained in the fissures n deep cracks of the rocks is greater than the biomass on the surface of the eartyh. Imagine, a great havoc as earthquake. Many things get ruined and in the process, they get degraded into the earth due to quake. Below the earth, are rocks.. Another instance to consider here is, many disastropus havocs like Tsunami also swipe the people n animals into the rocks as the book probablky said. Its true..!! Believe it..! Its not as the book wrote, it is true..! But, it is a thought provoking question and I appreciate you for throwing it at this place..!!
