Americans tend to be too close minded, Irish tend to be too emotional. Irish fit your stated needs better.
Americans tend to fantasize, boast and lie to others and themselves.
Once caught a whale on a 30 lb line...it was a monster.
Then I had a case of sweet mother's milk Guinness, shared it with the whale...made a soup and drank it in 24 hours.

The Irish I think would be more socially aware on world issues, but that does not mean they are any better as a person to want as a friend, yes Americans are not very up on world issues, but is that their fault, their media especially does not cover world events like you see in the European media, I am a European living in the states and apart from BBC America and the Internet there is hardly any internal reporting of what is going on outside this country apart from the obvious (Iraq), and even that is limited, before the Internet came along I would have thought you might as well have been living on another planet, it makes you wonder sometimes that in this so called land of the free, that they are purposely treated like mushrooms by their government, as in being kept in the dark and fed on bullshit!!!
Anyway my answer to your original question is the one that has the best qualities as a person not on their knowledge of the world.

I do not base having friends on that kind of criteria.
Americans are of course far more knowledgable of the world, are socially more aware and willing to "assimilate" other cultures (but NOT assimilate into other cultures). Assimilating into other cultures is a kind of death, don't you think?

The first two probably the Irish win, but for cultural assimilation America wins hands down. We have people from every nation on this planet living here and one helluva allot more wanting to come.
A good portion of Americans aren't socially aware, nor do they know allot about anything more than a couple hundred miles of their house.
