Are they a likeable bunch? Or are they greed ridden, badly dressed people with no sense of history or culture?

I'm an American. How am I greedy? I live in a modest home, with one vehicle. I don't make a ton of money per year, and I'm not out ripping someone else off for gain. So how is that greed?

Badly dressed? Seeing some of the fashions that come out of Europe, I wouldn't be so quick to call others "badly dressed". We dress comfortably here, and we have the right to wear what we please. And if we're happy with what we wear and are paying the bills, what difference does it make to you?

No sense of history? We only about about 230 years worth of history, which is short compared to other countries. But we went from a small ragtag nation to a superpower in that short period of time, which is more than we can say for Europe.

No culture? We're nothing but culture! We have more mixes of nationalities than any nation on the planet. All have their own traditions and culture. Just because it does not meet up to your snobby standards does not make it insignificant.

David, you have some silly anti american streak in you.
Anyways, Americans are a really likeable bunch. We are generous with our money and to those in need. I believe that Americans have a tremendous sense of culture, of our past and of our ancestors. (I am sure many of your ancestors have crossed the "pond" to come here for a better life) Maybe you need to get to know more Americans before you can criticize them. If Americans suck so much, don't have anything to do with the Internet, or on Yahoo for that matter. If you are American, then stop the self loathing.

I do, no matter what. My flesh and bones are french, but I've decided that my heart was american. My US friends sometimes have some sort of a complex when we talk of national history, education, etiquette, with reference to the old world. And I say don't, your history is fantastic your ancestors in 1620 survived the hardship of this new, rough continent, and you are the offspring of these courageous immigrants. As a cabin attendant for a french airline I've had the opportunity to spend a lot of times in the US (during a 25 year carreer) and this experience is extremely valuable to understand the american way of thinking. The tremendous size of your continent is a permanent stimulation for each one of us to try to reach beyond the limits. The sky is the limit, is a slogan for a youthful people. In Europe, we have rheumatism!I will never forget that GI's died by the thousands on the coasts of Normandy for us French, I'm still thankful that there is still a powerful nation that keeps a wary eye on what's going on around the world, and tries to maintain the western values, and stands up against terrorism wherever it has to. You guys are courageous, and you are generous too. I had a few days off in Houston,Texas, and I had decided to go to San Antonio with my wife. During the trip we decided to stop for a cup of coffee in a small town, Seguin, in the middle of nowhere. In the coffee-shop, there were two or three customers. The lady who served us the coffee started a friendly conversation with us. You know tourists... And we talked, and she told us about her own experiences of travelling. When it was time for us to leave, the lady said "coffee is on me". I declined the nice offer, I said no, you work is to sell beverages, and when we came in, we wanted to purchase something, not to have it free, otherwise how would you make a living? She was so kind and so friendly! I said to my wife this is the USA one of the rare places in the world where friendly people can be generous with total strangers. So carry on USA "me and my wife and my boys, we love you!"

I can sum that up pretty quick. I like almost all Americans and the ones I don't like can be found at Y!A making total idiots of themselves and trying to drag down the rest. This site and some of its users really undermind the beauty of the American people.

They're OK. Just like any other nation ...... a few bad ones but mostly good folk. We've got the same thing here in Canada and I bet you have the same thing where you live.
