Experts say we should wait until 6 months. For most babies this is ok but for bigger & hungrier babies it is usually safe to start rice cerial from 4 months. Rice cereal will not help your baby sleep longer through the night unless they are hungary & 99% of the time they are not hungary before 6 months. If your baby can hold their head up & can swallow most of the rice cereal (& show interest in eating it) then they are probably ready to eat, otherwise hold off, it's best for the proper maturation of the digestive system.

I have 4 healthy kids age ranging from 12yrs - 1 yr and I started for all of them the rice & wheat cereal during the 4th Month, but please try to make it very soft and in very small quantity at the beginning and then gradually increasing the amount when the stomach get used to it. Give the baby water after the meals, it's important.

I spoke to my pediatrician about this. She said that the American Pediatric Association is recommending that infants be on only breast milk or formula for six months. Then you can introduce cereal and other foods slowly. But that if your baby is not getting full on formula/milk, you can start earlier. You might see what you can find on their website - http://www.aap.org/

The doctors will tell you to wait until 4months. But i started at two months. Most babies cry because they are hungry and the formula/breast milk doesn't fill them up. The rice cereal will help them to sleep better and fill full.
I only give my baby a child's teaspoon full.

You should wait until at least 6 months for solids.. ideally you should wait until the child is reaching for food and is able to feed themsleves.

Rice cereal is a HORRIBLE first food... we eat too much prcessed food as it is... why would you want that to be your childs first food?

mushed banans or avocados are excellent for starter foods around 6 months... if you wait until the ideal time though, you can start with soft steamed veggies and soft fruits...

When should I introduce solid foods?

The Department of Health recommends exclusive breastfeeding until your baby is six months old. After six months, breastmilk alone doesn't provide your baby with enough nutrients, in particular iron, so other foods are needed.

Waiting until six months to introduce solid foods into your baby's diet will help minimise the risk of her developing adverse reactions to foods and allergies. This is particularly important if you have a family history of allergies, as the incidence of adverse food reactions, allergies and coeliac disease does decrease if you delay weaning until this time.
