A survey course is an introductory course in a particular subject area, in which the subject is explored in all its breadth.

Usually, one must take an introductory survey course before taking upper-level courses within a particular subject area. Upper level courses then explore specific issues, or periods of time, or themes, or subdisciplines within the larger subject area.
