I realise it would take time to become established & actually make decent money from it but any suggestions on how to get started would be appreciated.
I am interested in writing articles & non-fictional books.

You need a unique idea which is your selling point. Sadly, if you even have to ask the question, you don't have what it takes to make it.

Write and write and write.

Study writing markets and learn now to submit your work like a professional. (Public libraries have books on writing as a career.)

Hang out with writers. You can do that online at

If you are looking for an excellent course, I suggest Long Ridge Writing Group. Excellent instructors, a proven course, and an alumni group of many published writers.

I enrolled for the Writers Bureau's (UK) "Comprehensive Writing Course" in 2004 and am now a published writer with a 2-book deal from an UK publisher. (Won their "Writer of the Year 2007" award too:)

I would recommend Writers Bureau.

Visit www.writersbureau.com for info.

I would start to submit your article based work to the local papers. Also try some of the national mags that invite readers to submit articlesand stories. If you have the time and are determined to get on in this field, offer to do some work experience at a local paper for free....network like mad when you are there and get to know the industry...good luck...it's an exciting place to be...
