A fragrance gift is personal, then if you end up dating, they own something you like to snuggle with.
You could get them something crystal, like a picture frame, then if you start dating, they have something for your fav picture together.
You could get him something engraved that has to do with a hobby. If he plays guitar, for example, you could get him a digital tuner, engraved..."Are we on the same wavelength?" or "Hoping to strike a chord in you soon!" or something equally cheesy. At any rate, most hobbies and some jobs, have a small electronic device that would be handy. If he is into home improvement or if he does construction you could get him a special calculator for estimating supplies, or miter angles, or whatever. "I hope we can build on our friendship!" (god, someone save me from these pathetic sappy engraving ideas!!)
You could also get him a beverage gift...an engraved to go coffee mug...a really cool set of shot glasses or beer glasses, or some wine glasses, or a French press, or a neat pitcher. These don't have to be expensive, I have bought all these items before at discount outlet places like Steinmart and Ross, Tuesday Morning.
And guys never think food is a bad gift. Anything from homemade to store bought, gift cards, gift baskets, chips and dip. Do whatever you want, however fancy you want. Personalized bag of M&Ms might be cool.
