Hi, I used to do mystery shops. While you do get paid, its not nearly what one generally puts into it. Say you need to order pizza for delivery. Well you order the pizza and say spend $20 but get paid $9 for doing the shop. Or you are asked to go buy a movie or something and you spend the 15 or 20 dollars and get maybe 10 dollars back.
The reason I stopped doing it and went into a home business (I am a pampered chef consultant) is that I was not getting paid nearly anything to make the gas money to drive plus whatever I had to buy worth my time.

I do it. I am apart of 3 different mystery shopping companies. I like to do them because you can do them whenever you want. If I plan to go to the grocery store i search my emails to see if there's any for those days and i apply to them and most of the time i get them and then get paid!
I see it as getting an even bigger discount on those deals! Or if it's a clothing/retail shop, great! If i spend $50 bucks on something that would've cost me $100, and then get reimbured $25, i saved an overal 75%! There is also restaraunt shops that pay a bit more ($15), and restaraunts rarely have coupons, so it's a win win situation.
Do not pay before you shop! that's not needed, it should be free because you're an indepenant contractor. and some do require a W-4 form to be filled out.
