Well in Phoenix AZ. It's a necessity for two reasons. One, when it's 118-120 degrees outside it can be 240 in the car. So you need it to cool down the inside to at least you get moving. Second, a car without a/c is almost worthless and hard to sell esp. in the summer time. If we visit some nice cool areas --like less then 100 degrees; hey may as well save the fuel and enjoy the cool breeze.

Your crisis is thatr other people, not in your car have their window down? Okaaaayyyy. Well, some people are too cheap to pay for the extra gas that the vehicle consumes while operating the ac unit, others like fresh air, some people get headaches from air conditioning, and people like me smoke cigarrettes, and we gotta roll the window down to let the poison out of our cars. Hope this is helpful brother, and I was jsut picking on you at the beginning of the answer, so please don't be offended.

because the AC uses gas

Have you seen the price of gas lately?

Yeah it's freakin 3 bucks a gallon, which really sucks for people with gas guzzlers

AC has become a necessity. I mean which car made today doesn't have AC

The cooling effect of AC is inversely proportional to the heat generated by the incessant price hike of gasoline. So basically it is a question of economics and not of necessity or luxury.

I use a convertible, and always have the top open to get
fresh air and feel one with nature

AC in a car is useful when it's too hot outside
or when you are traveling through dust lands,or if
the air pollution is too much

There may be several reasons:
(i) If the car is from mid-segment, and is standing in open for a long time, it gets heated up and to cool the car initially many people open the windows.
(ii) At several times, when the fuel is less and one has to reach the destination early, he/she may open the windows.
(iii) One may be miser also.

I thought AC was standard unless you lived in Alaska or someplace relatively cold most of the year. And on all the cars I've been in you get to choose if you want it recycled or not. (some girl said she didn't like recirculated air) and your only supposed to recirculate it when your car is really hot to cool it down faster

People have their windows down because they either dont really understand what aircon is or they are cheap arses trying to save a few pennies a week (after forking out a grand for aircon when they bought the car).
