We don't need them. I don't need mine.
Infact I feel as if 90% are dead.

Humans are social creatures and need to be around someone. Relatives fit the bill in that respect.

We don't need them, as you don't need many things. You get to choose your friends you don't get to choose your relatives.

To learn us how to to love other people. Your family is the practising ground for you to learn how to love unconditionally. How can you have love other people and God, if you do not love you brother?Spreading that love to your neigbours (and your enemies!) become the second part.

I feel that your parents and siblings (and your grandparents) are the ones that you actually need...the rest are just useless...
My point of view anyway...

family is important. Whether by blood or belief.

Family helps us when we are unable to help ourselves. They are extensions of ourselves. Unlike friends we are connected to family on levels which cant be broken.
