Jeeze. The french revolution. The estates general (congress, kinda, but each class got one vote, and there were two upper and one lower) was seen to be bias, so the peasants rose up and refused to vote. They demanded rights, and the king refused them. They gathered in a tennis court because it was the biggest place they could find, and signed an oath to revolt and gain rights for the peasants. They stormed the Bastille (an armory), killed the soldiers, and made off with the weapons. To make a long story short, a big group of pissed-off women ended up marching into the palace carrying torches, and found the royal couple huddled in a closet. They ended up beheading Louis and Marie Antoinette, only to shortly be taken into war with Napoleon. (ever heard the quote "let them eat cake"? That was Marie Antoinette. the peasants had several years of bad harvests and were dropping like flies of starvation. When asked what to do, Marie told the administrators that they could eat cake, for all she cared. She was kind of a *****.)

The French revolution is sweet. Its the only successful revolution that was started by peasants. You should read about it some time- they never tell you the good parts of the story in school!

Edit- David, you were close. The first and second estates had no problem with the estates general. They ruled the vote. It was only the third estate that was involved in the tennis court oath.

The French Revolution.

Because he needed to raise money King Louis XVI was forced to call a session of the French parliament, called the Estates General. The Estates was made up of representatives from the three estates: the first was the nobility, the second the church and the third was everybody else.

When the Estates General got out of hand King Louis, at the urging of his advisors, sought to dissolve them and call for new elections. Representatives of all three estates found themselves locked out of the meeting hall, and chose to continue meeting in defiance of the royal edict.

The only building they could find was an indoor tennis court. Like the English under Cromwell, the French parliament swore an oath not to be dissolved before their demands were met.
