Anyone you ask is likely to give you a different answer. Why? Because goldfish can survive under a wide range of temperatures. This website lists temperatures from 40 - 90o : http://www.fishlore.com/Profiles-Goldfish.htm . Considering they can be kept outdoors in ponds over winter (if pond is more than 18" deep), they can survive down to around 32o. Not that they will thrive in all these temperatures, though. Below 55 degrees they don't eat, can't metabolize food, and become inactive. Too high of a temperature, their metabolism requires increased amounts of oxygen (as the water holds LESS oxygen with increasing temperature) and even more food which leads to a very messy tank and poor water quality. You need to do a balancing act here between activity and metabolism - somewhere around 65-75 (for most houses, this is room temperature) should be good.

Goldfish Temperature

Many people are going to tell you that goldfish do not need a heater. But I asked several professionals who keep very expensive goldfish the same question and they all told me to keep the temperature in the mid to high 70's year round. So a heater is necessary for goldfish to thrive. I had more problems without a heater than with. I have kept goldfish for 10 years now and did a lot of research on my own. Most all advice is opinion of the fish keeper, I just happened to take my advice from the best in the business. I drove all the way to Alabama for a day with Jo Anne Burke (former owner of Dandy Orandas). I use Rick Hess's book Fancy Goldfish - A complete Guide to Care and Collecting, he's also the owner of Goldfish Connection. Dr. Eric Johnson, who is the Fishdoc. Koko's Goldfish world is a good site as well. So do what you want, heating the tank can't hurt and no heat in my opinion can cause many problems.

Common plecos are OK with water temps down to about 70F, and goldfish are fine with water temps up to about 77F. They can handle warmer for a while, but it does seem to stress them a bit, less oxygen in the water etc. The 76F is a good average for most common tropical fish, but for that combo I would lower the temp a little, just keep it over 70F and the pleco will be OK You do know how big a tank you are going to need in the future right? Expect the goldfish to grow to 12", and the pleco 12-18" depending on the exact species. Ian

Goldfish are considered cold water fish....Certain varieties like the Black Moor Goldfish can live in near freezing water when in outdoor ponds. On the other hand they don't do well in temperatures over 77 degrees farenhiet, so don't mate them up with tropical temp. fish. Never touch them when they come to the surface to eat... real sensitive "slime coat", becomes damaged quite easily. Goldfish will get swim bladder disorder if they eat from the surface too often. I take a sample of tank water and soak the food in it until it sinks to the bottom of the sample water and poor it back into the aquarium. If you notice, no matter where the food is these little guys will eat it.

Anywhere between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius. But when you change the water, make sure you only change 10-15% of it, so your fishy friends don't die from shock. Oh and make sure you use a water ager/conditioner to remove all the chemicals from the water.

I think it's in between 62 and 70 degrees. Can't keep them much warmer than that. Check on-line though or get a book at the pet store.
