Shakespeare is considered the greatest playwright of the English language, the greatest of all languages by many. He had been raised a Catholic and was prominent after the Elizabeth I prohibited religious themes in drama. His plays are considered works of genius as he provides insights into the core of humanity while pleasing common folk and sophisticated audiences simultaneously.

Stanislavski directed the Moscow Art Theatre and was present during and after the Communist revolution. His handling of Chechov's plays was considered an important part of Soviet realism. He is actually known more as an acting teacher than as a director or actor.

Harold Pinter wrote several plays. He is considered one of the founders of the Theatre of the Absurd as plays like the Birthday Party violate the normal rules of reality while offering a strong reactions from the audience when performed correctly. (only very seldom are they successfully done.) English professors seem to like his plays much more than most audiences.
