Truly, the best art is going to come from an individual's creativty and their connection with it, not by committee.
I would rather NOT see any author or publishing house attempt o "custom craft" a book for me or anyone else.
Now, that said, what I truly would love to see in a next book?
First and foremost, humor, well placed and well executed amongst a great story.
If specifically I was talking to certain authors:
Douglas Coupland - something along the lines of Jpod, but without using himself as a character
Max Brooks - another ingenius novel like World War Z, truly the guy could write an instruction manual for beta max vcrs and I'd read it.
Stephen King - a true 1 book epic like The Stand

I am still waiting for some one to improve on H. Rider Haggard's book King Solomon's Mines. I would like to see a modern version or updated version that takes into account all the variables involved in the story. I mean the original mines were supposed to be controlled by the Queen of Sheba, but even before that they were called the Lost Mines of Ophir, which E.R. Burroughs in his Tarzan series called Opar. Supposedly the richest mines anywhere in the world. One fact that is true(even though the ship sank off Madagascar)is that a Sultan from India had a Pearl throne(throne was covered entirely in pearls, but at the top supposedly coming from King Solomon's Mines was a ruby the size of a large man's fist. Need some one to write a story about all the facts surrounding these ancient mines. I truly think this would make an intriguing and fascinating thriller or story to relate to others. Especially since it would be based on historical fact.

I'm a big fan of Neal Stephenson's work. Lately he's been doing a lot of historical fiction, set in the 17th century or the 1940's. I'd love to see him do something set in the early 20th century, possibly featuring some of the great technological innovators of that time (since that's an area of his interest and mine as well!).

Most of my favorite authors are dead. But I'd like to see more from Mark Danielewski but more like House of Leaves than Only Revolutions.
Or you know what would be really fun to read? Something frivilous from Chuck Palahniuk. Where there are no deep social commentaries, something just silly. Maybe a sci-fi.
Or if I could ask someone dead, I'd get Ayn Rand to squeeze out another great thick volume for me to spend another summer on.
