ugh.. by animation i mean like computer generised, and i want a sensible answer, not jus redneck freak cases talking bout entertaining and cartoons.

Hi,
Computer Animation serves many purposes. Besides the general entertainment like cartoons , it is also used widely in online training materials. Flash animation is being used in such cases. you can make animated presentations, animated documents which besides providing nice look and feel also drags your attention and makes you to study with interest.
Animation is also used in Gaming, advertisements, web designing etc.
When I come to your question of " How does animation impact the society", I personally feel that children learn more out of it. For example, they may not be always interested if you tell them ethics like ramayana and mahabharatha. And also in these busy days, most of the parents are not in a position to teach their kids about these ethics.
Kids are always interested in animation films and they learn easily that way. Best example is "Hanuman"
If parents do not find time to educate their kids in terms of moral development, I feel this kind of moral stories through animation films like Hanuman, lavakusa etc greatly serve the purpose.

Well is it not meant to entertain? Animation is a cheap way to produce a concept of something you can't do in real life. It also can be used as an attraction to pursuade people.
