Here's a thought: At least you get the choice. A king who doesn't want to be king can surely relinquish his crown, but a peasant who doesn't want to be a peasant has a much harder time of changing his stars.
If celebrities were really bothered by their complete lack of a private life, all they have to do is get the hell out of the limelight. Common people don't have the choice to have such a luxurious life, they don't even get to decide whether that is what they'd like or not.

Well sure. It could be hard... Take for instance: If David Schwimmer didn't want to be a celebrity anymore, and he gave up all his money, and stopped acting, etc. He would have a hard time getting people to treat him like a common man.
However, after around 10-15 years of not being in the media in any way, people who see him at the grocery store would stop caring about his former "celeb" status, I would think. I mean, he's just a person now.
However, a young actor who toils in obscurity for 15 years could go all of that time without getting an ounce of recognition for it. He'd never be a celebrity, regardless of how much he wanted it. In my opinion, being a celebrity is based on luck. Almost as much as being royalty is.
And the royalty is my main case in point here. To be royalty, you just have to be born to the right parents, basically. And you can stop living in luxury anytime you please, just give up the crown to the next guy and eventually no one will care.
