Sex-linked genes are located on the X chromosome. Since women have two X chromosomes and men one X and one Y (which generally does not carry the genes found on the X) then they may show different patterns of inheritance for such genes. Most obvious is the fact that a man only needs a single copy of a recessive allele for it to be expressed, while women need two.

Do not confuse this with sex-limited (only shows up in one sex) or sex-influenced (expressed differently in each sex)

An autosomal inheritance is one that both sexes, male or female, can get. For example, hair color or eye color. A sex-linked inheritance is related to the gender, for instance a male would have a penis and a female would have a vagina.
