Your video sync is out of wack. This can be either in the Monitor or the video card i the PC. If you (or a friend) have a PC nearby take your monitor to the other PC and see if te problem follows the monitor. if so the choices are fix it or replace it. cost being the factor. If it has outside controls or logical ones you may be able to adjust the vertical and horiz sync. If the problem stays with the PC most likely the video card took a power hit and needs to be replaced.

dracula … Has point, however I am more inclined to believe that it is a fault with your monitor rather than the graphics card. If it were the graphics card then you would usually get either a full screen of trash or no screen at all.

I have had a problem similar to what you are experiencing and it was a bad monitor. Those old picture tube monitors blow out with no warning and it is no longer cost effective to repair them.

You should go to a computer store like Best Buy, Circuit City or Comp USA and purchase a new monitor. Save all the paperwork and the box. Then plug the new monitor in and see if it works. If not then you need to check the cables, replace them with the new ones from the box if possible, or you can buy them at the same stores, but a lot of monitors do have the cords as part of the equipment.

Modern monitors come with two adaptors and at least one of them should match your graphics card. The best graphics cards have a plug that includes a square pattern of dots and a small horizontal tab. This is a digital plug, the same signal type that all TVs will have to be able to receive by the end of February 2009 (you can buy a converter box for your TV).

If it is not the cord or the monitor then it could be the video card. You can try to replace it since it is a just a plug in card, but you need to be a little computer savvy to do it. Any shop could do it easily, but they will charge you $20-$40 for the act. If you buy anything and keep the packaging and sales slips then you can return it, but I don't think you can get a refund for the installation of the new graphics card. So I would try that last. By that point you might also want to have them look under the cover of the box to see if they can find what else could be causing the trouble.

Sounds like a problem with your monitor, and not your computer. There should be a way to degauss, or "de-magnetize" your monitor, and that should help. Look for a button or an option in your display that looks like a magnet with a "no" sign around it.

If you try that and it doesn't help, it might be time to get a new monitor. The CRT (cathode ray tube, the part of the monitor that draws the picture across the screen) may be going out.

Also, believe it or not, I had a monitor once that had this problem, and smacking the side of it sometimes worked. But not for long.

If you have another monitor somewhere around the house, try hooking it up to your computer to see if the same thing happens. If not, it's a monitor issue. If it keeps happening, you do have a hardware problem, most likely with the video card. It might be a matter of just cleaning out the inside of the computer and re-seating the video card in its slot.

sounds like a problem with your motherboard. maybe you fried it by overheating. there are a multitude of possibilities for this. i can almost guarantee it's a hardware issue and not software. you're either going to have to take it in to get serviced or find someone who knows about computers to buy and install a new motherboard for you. then again, it might not be that. id get it checked out. power management issues come to mind as well.

you don't say the age or type of computer u have or what system u r using or speed or ram?if its fairly new and worth keeping you can try different scanning programs.
did you run scan disk and check thourgh
or maybe you can just put your computer in standby and shut off monitor when you leave it
then turn on monitor and hit any key when you come back
