I think breathing should be banned, because of all the germs and viruses that we breathe out. It is profoundly sad to see how intolerant people can be. Anti smoking is just one example of, I don't do it, so you won't do it. I am thinking about pubs. in particular.
I believe in trying to reduce pollution and toxic substances as far as is reasonable possible, but I don't believe in becoming obsessive about it, because nature itself can be extremely harmful, and surely, as human beings, our priority should be to try and get on with each other. We don't live forever, and some people who may have had an emotionally impoverished upbringing, may need a crutch to lean on, tobacco, alcohol etc. If nowhere else, then at least we could have smoking pubs.
Smoking amongst ancient tribes, was a social ritual (mainly men). They regarded that as more important (sharing a pastime) than looking for opportunities to object to each others habits. eg. your fouling my airspace, you nasty person. How social is that?
We need to seperate social habits from what we do to the planet on an industrial scale. Sense of proportion needed here.

"Several organisations in England and Wales protect and improve air quality. We regulate the release of pollutants into the atmosphere from large and complex industrial processes. This will soon include emissions from some large-scale agricultural activities, but releases to air from many will continue to be unregulated"
In my humble opinion driving a personally owned vehicle is not mandatory nor any more necessary than smoking cigarettes. In fact driving personally owned vehicles are more costly to the environment than public transit and or smoking cigarettes.
Try walking several miles back and forth to school and or work and quickly the quality of air will become your focus.
Two fold process, cars pollute air in the manufacturing process: refine fuel, emissions pollute air, drive car, fuel emissions pollute air yet again. Paint car, fumes pollute air. Every process by which the car is built manufactured and distributed to market emits pollutants in one fashion or form.
And of course as the above paragraph states even our food is sprayed in such a way as to pollute the air at the farming level.
It would be nice for everyone to quit smoking but why did we start smoking in the first place ? Probably because the precursors such as air pollution encourage smoking in the first place.

No, just tobacco, and only in the work place. Perhaps you could start a movement to pressurize the government to make Britain virtually smoke free?

?Diesel fumes are harmless:|
Mmmmmm, it is true that non smokers should be able to work without breathing in smoke. No wage is enough. Cars/lorries/buses... etc , they are already smoking outside anyway! You would't park your car inside with the engine running now would you? Well, a few have historically, some did get to speak about the experience.

Where I live smoking in public places is banned, but there are a lot informal settlements with no electricity and the smoke from their fires chokes everyone, including the poor little babies who live there. Wish that something could be done about that by the smoke police, and the authorities. Give them electricity. Diesel fumes are harmless.
