i'd have to say that selling is a one on one function to make one sale.
marketing is where you have a target market (a specific group to sell to) that you are aiming a campaign at through a chosen media.

Selling is basically selling a product. Whereas Marketing is a catch all phrase for activities or function that help to sell. At the end of the tunnel or funnel is sales.

Marketing activities would include : Advertising, Branding, Direct marketing, Emails, Database mining, Newsletter, Outdoor advertising, Customer retention or loyalty programme, etc.

All these leads to SALES ! Without which nobody gets paid a salary.

Marketing is more of your strategy in targeting your consumer while Selling is what you ultimately want to achieve and in what methods you want to do it, such as online, retail stores, or directmarketing. Success is when you combine the two for a profitable venture.
