Life is itself a stage we play our part till we die, every human has to act. If you truly understand him and do as he says i don't think it should harm you in any way, may be he does not want to hurt the elders so what is there in a bit of acting if it gives solaces to him and others. don't view only from your angle view from all sides by your acting may be tomorrow they might improve in their behavioural pattern who knows

I had the same issue when I was married. My ex mother-in-law was a know-it-all who had to make sure to tell us everything we were doing wrong. My choice? I avoided her at all costs. When my husband asked if I was going to visit with him during holidays, I would ask, "That all depends, do you want a happy holiday or not?" He never asked me again. Remember, you married HIM not them. :)
