Archibald Alexander Leach is right. The studio changed his name. At the time, Gary Cooper was a huge box-office draw and they wanted the same "ring" for their new British star. They reversed GC to CG and came up with Cary Grant. Cooper's real name, by the way, was Frank James Cooper. His agent changed his first name. She was from Gary, Indiana. Cooper was eternally grateful that she didn't come from Poochipsie.
