Jim, I have been lucky to have some really good friends in my life. But I have to tell you, any friend will "come and go." That's something that I have had to learn the hard way -- and shockingly, I did not learn this in childhood but in adulthood (when I reached middle age).

Just remember that there tends to be different levels in all of this: acquaintances, casual friends, close friends, and sometimes if we are lucky enough, best friends. A word of advice to you from an old friendship maker: Don't knock the casual friends and also do not knock another group of friends that may come into your life at times: temporary friends.

The danger for most friendships is when one or both of the friends is going through some type of change in his or her life. Some how, some way, one friend just cannot handle it.

I was an extremely lucky person early in life because I was blessed with a happy, caring, fun friend who I met in school as a child. We remained friends as adults.

thats a really hard question to answer cause it depends on what type of people your geting yourself involved in, i had alot of friends in high school but once school was done, the drama kicked in and then everyone was doing something behind someone back to were you just don't want to deal with it. So you stop talking to those people but you may stick around with one or two. But in a life time, thats hard to say i would hope that i could make five but i might not be that lucky. it's hard to say.
