Obviously we're not talking an every day thing, but do facials really make a significant difference in the health of your skin? I've never had one but I'd like some tips from folks who have. And are there any harmful long term effects?

The first time I had a facial my skin glowed and I felt marvelous. Since then I've been several times to a facial, it was never as good as the first time and once the facial had no effect at all, I could have washed my face with soap and water and would have had the same result.
I rarely go now, perhaps once a year if I get a discount coupon

One of the best things about facials (and the most painful part) - is the extractions. Your pores are left super-clean, and your skin, glowing. And short of steaming your skin at home or using a good mask or Biore strips regularlyl, nothing does get your pores perfectly clean-feeling like a good facial.

HOWEVER .........Today's skin care products are more advanced.... science plus nature. They make for excellent 'at-home' microdermabrasion and other exfoliating products, masks and various treatments like serums and such - so spa/salon facials are not needed as frequently.

The best thing for good skin is keeping it clean, toned, moisturized and hydrated (both extermally and most importantly, internally by drinking lots of water) and keeping it protected from UVA and UVB sun rays. So sunscreen is a must. And removing all makeup thoroughly each night is essential to good skin.

Following these steps are really all you need. And facials at the spa/salon are not the only way to having healthy skin. They are just a nice, luxurious indulgence once in awhile.

If you take good care of your skin at home, expensive facials out are not necessary. If you have the money - great, treat yourself. But if you are short on cash, following all the steps above will suffice. Instead, save your money for therapeutic massages or a nice pedicure.

I used to have one every month, and I noticed a difference in my skin. I'm outside a LOT and my skin takes a beating, but it was a lot smoother and softer when I was having regular facials. Either way though, the hour long session was soooo relaxing and felt so great that it was worth it.
