So I'm a high school teacher (female) and there's this student (male) in one of my classes who i get along with really well and I think we're ready to go to the next level. He is 18. Is this illegal?

It is definetly illegal. The reason for that is that the relationship would/could be seen as coerced as long as he is still your student and you are still his teacher. It has to do with this idea about power and exploiting vulnerability.

I would say, if you want to take it to the next level, at least wait until he is no longer your student and you are no longer his teacher. But, even then, it's a little risky. I'm not completely versed in law and order to say if it's illegal after you guys are no longer teacher/student.

You need to get a grip on reality. It should be obvious that whatever a student's age, a relationship between a teacher and her student is inappropriate. It's an obvious conflict of interest, and even if you could somehow be objective about grading, anyone who knows about the relationship would not be convinced of your objectivity.

Finally, it's unethical because you are in a position of authority, and as such, this student no doubt trusts and respects you in that role. You would be taking terrible advantage of that situation if you enter into a romantic relationship with the student.

By law I don't think it is illegal. Your contract may have a clause prohibiting such, and in that case it could be grounds for dismissal. It is however, terribly unwise.
There is only a brief time until this student will no longer be in school. For all concerned, it would be best if you put this relationship on hold until after graduation.

It may not be technically illegal, but it is certainly unethical and grounds to get you fired. Regardless of any extenuating circumstances, the teacher-student relationship is one that cannot ethically be breached.
If you really want to date him, you simply must wait until he graduates. End of story.

Don't go there. While it is not technically illegal, you are in a position of power, and so it is unethical. You could lose your job.
