Word creates .doc files. So does Wordpad. Word is (generally) an additional program that may not be on your computer. Wordpad IS on everyone's Windows computer, and has been for many years. Unless you need to illustrate an advanced use of MS Word, Wordpad will be sufficient.
You can determine whether you have Word by either looking for a shortcut in your Start menu, or checking under the Control Panel's Add Remove Programs item. The list there is alphabetical.

I will assume for simplicities sake that you are using XP.
Go to Control Panels and double click on Add or Remove programs.
This will show you every single program that is installed on your computer.
Look for Microsoft Office and click 'Change'
Then click 'add or remove features'
This will show you which Office programs you have installed.
If you have it installed and can't find it - search your desktop and create a shortcut for it...
Hope this helps.

You can use open office. Its free and will work just like microsoft office. So if your teacher wants the paper in word format, it will work just fine.

Well, first you have to have Microsoft Office install on your computer to have MS Word...if you don't have office installed, you don't have word either! The Library at school WILL have MS Word on it though...You can buy MS Office for students for around $100...has Outlook, Excell, Word and I think Access too...You'll have to show them your school ID to get the discount though...
