Please Help! I have a niece who has "come out" already at age 15. Not sure we can find anything around here (Lubec, Maine) but price and travel are no object. As long as she can be cured.

I DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR BELIEFS ARE. I DIDN'T ASK FOR YOUR OPINIONS! I NEED INFORMATION!

Thanks for agreeing that sexual orientation is inborn, not a "choice," and completely natural. Thanks also for working to stamp out prejudice, hatred and bigotry.

All the best to you. Your niece seems fine.

Kind Regards,
Your Gay Lord

No groups I have yet to hear of can accurately claim to "cure" anyone. If she's sexually active, and Christian, there are groups that help her to not be sexually active. The "thoughts" will ALWAYS be there, and both you and her should know that going in.

You should also be aware that these groups do increase the risk of suicide. If you're going to send her somewhere, do try to watch her for that.

Lastly, you should know that the groups that claim successes refuse to have any peer-reviewed scientific studies done on their successes. That means, at best, that there may be scientific accidents in their data. At worst, they can completely make up whatever they want. I won't say these groups outright don't work, but i will say there is NO evidence to say that they do work. Ask the people you call if they have any peer-reviewed studies out.

Prisons are over crowded, the fewer people we put there the better. Also, most prisons are not set up to deal with drug users ... they have special needs, especially when going through withdrawal that are a drain on the resources of prisons. Send a drug user to prison, he learns more about committing crimes to support his habit. Send the same drug user to in-patient rehabilitation ... maybe he gets clean and becomes a productive member of society. Breaking the cycle of drug abuse takes more than punishment. It takes behavior modification and treatment to clear the system. Dumping a junkie in prison without proper support to break his habit just puts them on the fast track to committing more crimes, the profits from which will be used to buy more drugs.

It's not something that can be cured. My son came out a year ago at almost 14 after going through major depression and suicide attempts. It has been a difficult time for us but accepting him and loving him for who he is will keep him alive. you have to do the same for your neice. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Just be understanding and accepting thats what she needs. This is something she feels the same way you feel the attraction to the opposite sex.
try finding a PFLAF support group in your area you can probably search online.
good luck and just try to relax about it.

Homosexuality cannot be 'cured'.. its not the flu!

Let your niece be who she is and stop trying to make her someone she isnt! Instead you should be glad and proud that she is finally being honest with herself and others about it!

I will however suggest that she and the family .. including you participate in some counseling so you all can accept this and discuss feelings, fears etc, in a healthy and postive manner.

I'm afraid there is no "cure" for something that isn't a disease...
Please, don't give the girl a trauma... treat her as a person and let her be herself.... she doesn't need "cure", she just needs love and acceptance....
If you send her to any of these places they'll just put make up over who she really is and then she'll be unhappy until she figures out a way to take this make up cover off....

Try to understand the ones you love, don't try to change them...

just something for you to think:
When in your life you had the chance to choose if you were going to be gay or straight? Being gay is not a choice.

Please don't blame your niece... love her and she'll be happy...

Your concern tells me you love her very much but most likely she was "born" that way. You will not be able to change her and need to accept her for who she is. Unfortunately, I know that is difficult but you should read as much as you can on the subject in order to be more understanding and educate yourself.
She has a hard road ahead of her and I know you don't want to purposely make it harder for her.
That isn't to say that you have to agree with her lifestyle but you still can be a supportive family member.

Hey I am here for the first time. I came across this question and I find the answers really valuable. I am hoping to give something back to the community and help others too.

The only "therapy" your niece will need is dealing with homophobes, weak minded people that are afraid of those that are different. She can learn how to protect herself from people like you and let go with love!

Remember who applauded Christ? He was different and it was the supposed "moral majority" that wanted Him dead.

The rehab of same gender oriented people has been proven to be a fraud and often mimicks Hitlers experiments!
