I'm trying to figure out what the best option would be to get a good player and just want to make sure I am well informed before I buy.

Nope. IPood files only work on iPoods thanks to their DRM (digital rights management). I've got a Zune and tried to download videos from iTunes, but they wouldn't work.

I think there's software that will break the DRM, but you will need to spend some money...

With the exception of video podcasts, which come in as .M4V (that's the MP4 video extension, BTW), all of my audio podcasts arrive in an unprotected MP3 format, which is the one universal audio format. That means that any player can play them. iTunes might be necessary to download certain podcasts that are only available through the iTunes store (free of charge), but there are other downloader programs out there that can pull them in from independant sources.

Now, for video podcasts, you'll still probably have to go with an iPod or stick to watching them via iTunes on your computer. The upside to going with an iPod is if you buy the Video model, there are cables that will allow you to port the video feed directly to your TV.

I got a free iPod Video from this site, and I would recommend it to anyone who's looking to buy an iPod. Why pay for something you can get for free, right?
