Historic structures and old structures typically involve artistry and architecture, combined with extinct construction methods and materials which cannot be reproduced. Hence, destruction of these structures would mean anihilating the past.

Structures as the ones you described should be preserved and maintained for future generations because once they are demolished, they are gone forever.

Absolutely try to preserve them. There's an organization here in Portland Oregon dedicated to buying these old buildings and creating a multi-purpose establishment with them. Known for good eats in their restaurants, great micro-brewery ales, pub-style movie theaters, bed and breakfasts/inn accomodations, cigar bars, spa facilities, you name it. Great fun, people love to hang out or have conferences, reunions and the like in them. McMenamins...that's the folks who do it here. They recreate a thing of beauty from these old buildings that in turn produce a profit....must be....cause they keep doing it over and over ! :o)

Yes, some of the ones that have historic value, but not all of them. Much of the building material should be recycled.
